The B-PEACE for Jorge Campaign and its partner organizations within the Massachusetts Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence are excited to have been successful at putting forth a bill that is currently making its way through the Massachusetts Legislature. It is our hope that the bill (H.4121), which was filed on May 27th by House Speaker Robert DeLeo, will reach Governor Patrick’s desk to be signed into law by July 31st, before formal sessions close for summer recess.
Last Monday, June 9th, H.4121 emerged from an initial review by the Public Safety Committee, passing by a simple majority vote, with seven votes in favor and six against. The two committee chairs were split, with Representative Harold Naughton, a Democrat from Clinton, MA, supporting it, and Senator James Timilty, a Democrat from Walpole, MA, voting against it. Below are the votes, as reported by the State House News Service:
House lawmakers who supported H 4121, aside from Naughton, included Reps. Alan Silvia (D-Fall River), Brian Ashe (D-Longmeadow), Michael Brady (D-Brockton), Linda Campbell (D-Methuen), and Sean Curran (D-Springfield). They were joined by Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz (D-Jamaica Plain).
House lawmakers who voted against H 4121 included Reps. Cleon Turner (D-Dennis), David Vieira (R-East Falmouth), and Nicholas Boldyga (R-Southwick). They were joined by Sens. Timilty, Michael Moore (D-Millbury) and James Welch (D-West Springfield).
Three lawmakers reserved their rights: Reps. James Dwyer (D-Woburn), Brian Mannal (D-Barnstable) and Sen. Richard Ross (R-Wrentham).
We so excited to have been instrumental in supporting the drafting of this legislation. We are grateful to all of our supporters and ask that you stay with us in the process of delivering H 4121 to Governor Deval Patrick’s desk on July 31st.
Please call your representatives and senators, using the call script below, to tell them that you want them to support stronger gun control in Massachusetts by voting in favor of H 4121. Also, please call Governor Patrick to let him know the same.
